Qubes OS Flaw Allows Compromised VMs to Seize Control of Dom0

A vulnerability in the qvm-copy-to-vm tool enables arbitrary code execution in the system's most privileged domain.

A critical security vulnerability in Qubes OS allows an attacker who has compromised a virtual machine to execute arbitrary code in dom0, the system's most privileged domain. This flaw effectively bypasses the operating system's core security architecture, granting a malicious qube full control over the entire host machine.

The vulnerability, tracked as QSB-118, is triggered when a user employs the `qvm-copy-to-vm` tool to move a file from dom0 into a compromised qube. According to Qubes OS security bulletins, a malicious qube can respond to this request with a specially crafted error message. Because dom0 fails to properly sanitize the filename contained in that error response before passing it to a system command, the attacker can inject and execute arbitrary shell commands.

The Technical Failure

The root of the issue lies within the `display_error` function located in `qfile-dom0-agent.c`. When a file transfer fails, this function uses the `system()` call to launch a GUI error dialog via kdialog or zenity. The string passed to this call includes the filename reported by the target VM.

While the system does employ a `sanitize_remote_filename()` function, Qubes OS documentation reveals that this function is insufficient. It only removes double quotes and non-ASCII characters, leaving shell meta-characters intact. This oversight allows an attacker to break out of the intended command string and execute their own code with the high privileges of dom0.

Breaking the Root of Trust

Qubes OS is built on a security-by-compartmentalization architecture designed to isolate risky activities into separate virtual machines. In this model, dom0 serves as the root of trust; it is the administrative domain that manages the hypervisor and all other VMs. The primary security premise of the OS is that even if a qube is fully compromised, the attacker remains trapped within that isolated environment.

By enabling arbitrary code execution in dom0, QSB-118 turns a routine administrative task—copying a file—into a privilege escalation vector. This represents a critical failure of the system's isolation boundaries, as it allows a low-privileged guest to seize the keys to the entire kingdom.

System-Wide Impact

Qubes OS has confirmed that all releases of the operating system are affected by this vulnerability. Because the flaw exists in the fundamental way the `qfile` protocol handles error reporting between the privileged domain and its guests, no version of the OS is inherently immune.

Users are advised to apply the latest security updates from the Qubes secpack to mitigate the risk. Until patched, the primary vector for this attack remains the use of `qvm-copy-to-vm` toward any qube that may be compromised or untrusted.
