The mobile industry's tradition of decadal generational leaps is facing a theoretical challenge. Researcher Adnan Aijaz has published a paper titled "Will there be a 7G?" (arXiv:2609.01877), which questions whether the industry should continue its habit of rigid generational numbering.

Accepted for the IEEE Next Generation Communications (NextGCom) 2026 conference, the paper proposes a "readiness framework" to determine if a 7G generation is actually necessary. Aijaz argues that 7G should not be an inevitable exercise in numbering or a simple list of more ambitious radio targets. Instead, he posits that a seventh generation is only justified if future needs cannot be satisfied by 6G-Advanced, Wi-Fi, or other complementary wireless systems.

The Framework for Necessity

The proposed readiness framework evaluates the need for 7G across several critical dimensions: demand-led need, system-level discontinuity, coordination value, sustainability, trust, and geopolitical viability. By applying these metrics, the industry can determine if a new standard is required or if continuous evolution is sufficient.

Aijaz identifies specific "discontinuities" that could potentially justify the leap to 7G. These include the implementation of agentic network operation, RF-native computing, quantum-enabled interworking, and policy-aware spectrum governance. Without such fundamental shifts, the paper suggests that the push for a new "G" may be more about marketing than technical necessity.

Context of the 6G Transition

This academic inquiry arrives as the industry is currently formalizing the transition to 6G. This process is being managed through the ITU-R IMT-2030 framework and 3GPP Release 21. Historically, the industry has followed a strict cycle of 4G, 5G, and now 6G, but there is growing discourse on whether this cycle is sustainable or if future improvements will simply be continuous evolutions of existing infrastructure.

Industry Implications

Moving away from rigid generational leaps could significantly impact Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and end-users. The transition between generations often involves massive costs and technical complexity. If the industry shifts toward a "post-6G infrastructure fabric" rather than a strict 7G standard, it could reduce the financial burden on operators and eliminate the confusion for users who often perceive little practical difference between current generations.

As the 6G specifications solidify, the industry must decide if it will continue the decadal numbering tradition. The central question remains whether a seventh generation can provide utility that 6G, 6G-Advanced, and the surrounding cloud and industrial ecosystems cannot. For now, the focus remains on the formalization of 6G, while the theoretical justification for its successor remains an open debate.
