Saab Unveils A3 Autonomous Concept to Complement Gripen E

The Swedish aerospace firm is pursuing a 'peer-capable' drone strategy and an AI pilot academy to bridge the gap toward next-generation air power.

Saab has unveiled the A3, a high-end autonomous combat aircraft designed to operate alongside the Gripen E. The move signals Sweden's intent to integrate sophisticated unmanned systems into its sovereign air defense architecture before the 2040s.

The A3 concept is a tailless, supersonic vehicle featuring a double-delta-wing design. Saab intends for the aircraft to serve as a "peer-capable complement" to crewed fighters rather than a disposable asset. To realize this vision, the company is developing two demonstrators: the A1 and A2. The A1 is a low-observable, supersonic aircraft powered by a GE Aerospace F414 engine and is expected to fly within 15 months. The A2, also powered by the F414, is scheduled for flight by the end of the decade and will include an internal weapon bay.

A Strategic Bridge to 2040

This development coincides with the Swedish government's Concept Air Program (SWAP), which will determine by 2030 whether Sweden develops a domestic Gripen successor, joins an international consortium, or purchases foreign aircraft for the 2040s. Unlike some U.S. programs that prioritize "attritable" or low-cost disposable drones, Saab is focusing on high-end capabilities. This approach is designed to avoid mission creep and ensure the aircraft meet the strict certification requirements for operation within controlled European airspace.

Beyond the airframe, Saab has established an AI fighter pilot academy. Dennis Malmgren, head of the academy's development, stated that the AI can be adapted to fit different mission profiles, ranging from an "aggressive pilot to a balanced pilot" or from a "collaborative pilot to a friendly pilot." This software foundation allows the autonomous models to be tailored to specific tactical needs in real-time.

Economic and Industrial Implications

The A3 offers a significant cost advantage over crewed platforms. Saab estimates the acquisition cost of the A3 will be approximately half that of a Gripen, while life-cycle costs are expected to be around one-third. By offering a tiered approach—combining high-end "loyal wingmen" like the A3 with lower-cost mass platforms such as the Ruby demonstrator—Saab is positioning itself as a leader in the European transition to unmanned combat.

The Path Forward

The A3 is viewed not as a final product, but as a stepping stone. Peter Nilsson, head of Saab's advanced programs unit, noted that the A3 will lead to A4 and A5 iterations, eventually guiding the company toward its next core fighter. While the A3 provides an immediate path to enhancing the Gripen E's capabilities, the industry will be watching the A1 and A2 flight tests to see if Saab can deliver on its promise of a truly peer-capable autonomous partner.
