SCX.ai Launches Sovereign AI Cloud to Keep Australian Data Onshore
The startup raised $40 million in an ASX IPO to build ASIC-based inferencing infrastructure across Australia.
Australian AI startup SouthernCrossAI (SCX.ai) is launching a sovereign inferencing cloud designed to keep sensitive data and AI workloads within national borders. The move provides a local alternative to foreign hyperscalers, ensuring that intellectual property and cultural context remain onshore.
The company recently entered the public market via an initial public offering (IPO) on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), raising $40 million to scale its operations. As of the end of July, SCX.ai recorded contracted annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $6.5 million, supporting a user base of more than 400 active customers. To power its technical rollout, the company partnered with DDN to integrate its ASIC-based infrastructure with DDN's Infinia data platform. The company's first operational node is currently located at Equinix's SY5 data centre in Sydney.
The Push for Data Sovereignty
Currently, many Australian enterprises transmit sensitive data to overseas servers to access high-performance AI services. This reliance on foreign infrastructure creates risks regarding data privacy and national security. SCX.ai positions itself to mitigate these risks by offering a sovereign alternative that emphasizes local control. Unlike traditional AI clouds that rely heavily on power-hungry GPUs, SCX.ai utilizes Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) to improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of large-scale inferencing.
Economic and National Implications
Beyond privacy, the shift toward sovereign AI is an economic necessity. David Keane, Founder and CEO of SCX.ai, argues that relying on foreign providers drains economic value from the local economy. "If we're simply sending all the economic value overseas, it will impact our country and perhaps even our exchange rate," Keane stated. He emphasized the need for Australian alternatives that prioritize local resources, noting the importance of energy and water management in the AI value chain.
Future Outlook
As SCX.ai expands its footprint, the industry will watch how its ASIC-based approach competes with dominant GPU-led clouds in terms of cost and performance. While the company continues to scale its infrastructure through the DDN partnership, the broader goal remains the capture of local economic value and the protection of Australian data. Further expansion of its node network across the country will be the primary indicator of whether the market is ready to pivot away from global hyperscalers toward a sovereign model.
