Seagate Sells Out of Exabyte Storage Through 2028 Amid AI Infrastructure Surge
The storage giant's high-capacity drives are almost entirely allocated for the next four years as data centers pivot to support AI inference and agentic applications.
Seagate has reported that its high-capacity nearline exabyte storage is largely sold out through 2028. This unprecedented demand is driven by the rapid expansion of cloud and data center infrastructure required to sustain the current artificial intelligence boom.
According to CEO Dave Mosley, the vast majority of the company's nearline exabytes are now allocated into calendar 2028 based on existing long-term supply agreements. The shift is heavily concentrated in the enterprise sector, with Mosley noting that data center demand now represents approximately 90% of Seagate's exabyte shipments. This surge in volume is reflected in the company's financial performance; for Q4 2026, net income rose to $1.29 billion, up from $488 million in the prior year's period. For the full fiscal year 2026, Seagate reported annual revenue of $12.2 billion, a 34% year-over-year increase, with annual net income climbing to $3.18 billion from $1.47 billion.
The Shift to AI Inference
This demand spike marks a transition in the AI lifecycle. While early investments focused heavily on the compute power needed for model training, the industry is shifting toward inference and agentic applications. These systems generate and require the retention of massive amounts of data to maintain historical context and ensure regulatory compliance. To manage this, cloud providers are increasingly adopting tiered storage architectures. This strategy pairs high-performance SSDs for immediate processing with mass-capacity hard drives to handle the bulk of the data, balancing cost-efficiency with performance at a global scale.
The Economic Moat of Magnetic Storage
Despite the ongoing rise of flash storage, these results demonstrate that traditional high-capacity hard drives remain critical to AI infrastructure. The economic advantages of magnetic storage for mass data retention make it the only viable option for the exabyte-scale requirements of modern AI. The fact that supply is allocated years in advance indicates that the industry is entering a sustained, multi-year investment cycle, treating storage not as a commodity but as a strategic bottleneck in the AI pipeline.
The Roadmap to 50TB
To meet this appetite for density, Seagate is accelerating its hardware roadmap. The company is currently testing its second-generation Mozaic 4 platform, which supports capacities of up to 44TB per drive. Seagate aims to have 50% of its Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) exabytes on the Mozaic 4 platform by the end of 2026. Looking further ahead, the company stated that Mozaic 5—a platform capable of 5-plus terabytes per disk—is on track for qualification shipments in late 2027. The industry will be watching whether these density gains can keep pace with the exponential growth of AI-generated data.
