Apple has updated its threat notification system to alert iPhone, iPad, and Mac users of government-grade spyware attacks via lock screen push notifications. The move provides immediate visibility into sophisticated surveillance attempts that are otherwise invisible to the average user.
In a wave of alerts sent on August 14, 2026, Apple notified targeted users across 110 countries. The specific push notification reads: "Apple detected a mercenary spyware attack targeted at your iPhone. There are actions you can take now to protect your data and device." Since the debut of this warning system in 2021, Apple has issued similar notifications to customers in more than 150 countries.
The Fight Against Mercenary Tools
Apple introduced the mercenary spyware alert system in 2021 to counter the proliferation of high-end surveillance tools used by governments to target political rivals and civil society. These tools infiltrate devices silently, often without requiring the user to click a link or download a file. The system has previously helped expose large-scale abuses, including the use of Pegasus software during elections in Poland.
Why Immediate Alerts Matter
Because state-sponsored attacks leave almost no trace on a device, the shift to lock screen push notifications is a critical improvement. By moving the alert to the lock screen, Apple ensures high-risk targets are notified the moment a threat is detected, rather than discovering the breach through a buried setting or email.
These alerts serve as the primary signal for victims to seek professional security assistance. John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, says these notifications create a "critical signal that a community is being targeted." Scott-Railton noted that when individuals receive these alerts and seek help, it often triggers broader investigations that reveal significantly more cases of surveillance than a single alert would suggest.
