Feedly blames 'Mark as Read' bug for weeklong web app slowdown
The RSS leader faces user backlash as performance dips coincide with a strategic pivot toward AI-driven threat intelligence.
Feedly, a global leader in standalone RSS readers, has spent the last week addressing a significant performance degradation of its web application. The slowdown left some users describing the service as "unusable," sparking concerns that the company's shift toward enterprise AI is compromising its core product.
CEO Edwin Khodabakchian attributed the instability to a specific technical bug. According to Khodabakchian, the slowdown was linked to the "Mark as Read" function, specifically affecting accounts that utilize a large number of folders. This technical failure coincided with other user frustrations, including reported loading issues with the main iOS application and the retirement of the "Feedly Classic" app.
The Shift to AI Intelligence
Feedly rose to prominence as a primary destination for power users following the shutdown of Google Reader in 2013. With approximately 15 million users, it remains a cornerstone of digital information curation. However, in recent years, the company has aggressively pivoted its product focus toward AI-powered cyber threat intelligence (CTI). This strategic move aims to provide businesses with automated tools to track emerging security threats, moving the company up-market from a general-purpose reader to a specialized enterprise intelligence platform.
Tension Between Legacy and Innovation
This incident underscores a growing tension between maintaining a legacy consumer product and pursuing high-value enterprise markets. For a community of power users who rely on RSS for precise information curation, any perceived instability can erode trust. The perception that basic functionality is being neglected in favor of AI features has created a rift between the company and its most loyal user base.
Despite the strategic pivot, Khodabakchian maintains that the core reading experience remains essential. "Despite the pivot to cyber threat intelligence, fixing the basic RSS functionality is still a priority because our CTI community uses the news-reading capability," the CEO stated.
What to Watch
While the "Mark as Read" bug has been identified, the company must now prove that its infrastructure can support both its legacy RSS base and its new AI ambitions. Users will be watching to see if the iOS loading issues are fully resolved and whether the company improves communication regarding the retirement of legacy tools like the Classic app. The long-term challenge for Feedly will be balancing the stability required by 15 million readers with the agility needed to compete in the AI intelligence sector.
