Stoke Space Raises $1 Billion to Scale Fully Reusable Nova Rocket
The aerospace startup brings total funding to $2.3 billion as it targets full reusability for both booster and upper stages.
Stoke Space has completed the initial closing of a $1 billion Series E funding round to accelerate the development of its fully reusable launch architecture. The capital injection brings the company's total funding to date to $2.3 billion.
The new funds are earmarked for scaling production and infrastructure, as well as financing the development of a second-generation vehicle. According to CEO Andy Lapsa, the round is designed to increase flight frequency and lay the necessary groundwork for the company's next-generation rocket. As part of its immediate roadmap, the company confirmed that the first flight of the Nova Pathfinder will carry a spacecraft for the asteroid mining firm AstroForge.
The Pursuit of Full Reusability
Stoke Space is competing in the medium-lift launch market with a distinct technical philosophy. While industry leaders like SpaceX utilize partial reusability with the Falcon 9, Stoke is designing its system for full reusability of both the booster and the upper stage from the outset.
To solve the problem of upper-stage reentry—where extreme heat typically destroys the vehicle—Stoke employs a specialized active-cooling system. This architecture flows super-cooled liquid hydrogen through a metallic heat shield, protecting the vehicle as it returns to Earth. This approach aims to eliminate the need for disposable components, a hurdle that has historically limited the efficiency of orbital launch systems.
Market Implications
Achieving full reusability is widely regarded as the "holy grail" of rocket science. Clay Fisher, a General Partner at Spark Capital, noted that full reusability is the inevitable end state for the industry, offering an order-of-magnitude advantage in both cost and service over partially reusable systems.
By targeting a medium-lift niche—positioned between small-lift providers and super-heavy-lift vehicles like SpaceX's Starship—Stoke is strategically timing its growth. The company aims to deploy the Nova Block 2 by 2029, a timeline that coincides with the projected retirement of the Falcon 9. If successful, Stoke could capture a significant share of the commercial and national security launch markets by offering lower costs and higher flight cadences.

Industry observers will be watching the upcoming Nova Pathfinder flight to verify the performance of the active-cooling heat shield in a real-world environment.
