UK consolidates £7.8 billion in new space strategy to boost security and growth

The UK government has launched a comprehensive new national space strategy that consolidates £7.8 billion in spending through 2030. The move signals a pivot toward treating orbit as a critical domain for national security and economic competition rather than a purely scientific endeavor.
The new framework integrates civil ambitions with military requirements, focusing heavily on satellite communications and space domain awareness. According to government data, £2.8 billion has been allocated to satellite connectivity, specifically supporting the Skynet programs and Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO). Additionally, the plan earmarks £880 million for space control and space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
To enhance its ability to monitor orbital threats, the strategy includes specific funding for space domain awareness. This includes £149 million for the European Space Agency's (ESA) Vigil mission, designed to protect infrastructure from solar storms and debris, and £85 million for the National Space Operations Centre. Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST), stated that the plan will help keep Britain secure by strengthening the nation's ability to launch satellites, detect threats, and protect essential daily services.
Strategic Course Correction
This reboot formally replaces the 2021 National Space Strategy, which had come under significant fire from the House of Lords. The UK Engagement with Space Committee previously criticized the 2021 iteration for a lack of strategic direction, leaving the sector without a clear roadmap. By consolidating funding across the Ministry of Defence, BIST, and other departments, the government is attempting to resolve a fragmented approach to procurement and operations.
Economic and Security Implications
Beyond security, the strategy is designed to scale a domestic space sector already valued at £18.6 billion, which currently supports more than 55,000 skilled jobs. The shift toward "military fusion" in orbit reflects a global trend where the lines between commercial and defense space capabilities are blurring. For the UK, this means protecting critical infrastructure from both natural hazards and hostile activity while attempting to reindustrialize its domestic capabilities to reduce reliance on foreign providers.
