Anthropic Signs $10 Billion Computing Deal With Volta Infra Holdings
The AI lab is diversifying its infrastructure by partnering with a new cloud startup to scale capacity in Norway.
Anthropic has signed a six-year, $10 billion computing agreement with Volta Infra Holdings to expand its processing power. The deal marks a strategic move by the AI lab to secure the massive compute resources required to keep pace with the growing demand for its products.
Under the terms of the agreement, the computing capacity will be hosted at Bitdeer's Tydal data center in Norway. To provide the necessary scale, Volta Infra Holdings plans to outfit the facility with NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems. This arrangement involves a complex layering of partnerships: Anthropic serves as the end user, contracting with Volta as the infrastructure manager, who in turn leases the physical site and power from Bitdeer.
The Infrastructure Layer
To support this operation, Bitdeer has entered into a separate 16-year lease and services agreement with Volta. This contract covers 121 critical IT megawatts (MW) and carries initial contracted revenue of approximately $4.7 billion. By leveraging Bitdeer's existing footprint in Norway, Volta can rapidly deploy the high-end NVIDIA hardware necessary for frontier model training and inference.
A Shift in AI Scaling
This partnership represents a significant shift in how AI laboratories manage their hardware needs. While most labs have historically relied on major hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google, Anthropic is increasingly diversifying its infrastructure. The move highlights the rise of specialized "AI factories"—independent infrastructure startups capable of securing massive power blocks and the latest hardware outside the traditional cloud giant ecosystem.
Furthermore, the choice of location underscores the strategic importance of Norway's energy landscape. The region's ability to provide stable, large-scale power is becoming a critical competitive advantage for global AI scaling, where energy availability is often the primary bottleneck for growth.
