This infrastructure began in the 1940s with early mainframe machines such as ENIAC and UNIVAC I. The industry progressed through the ARPANET era and the internet boom of the 1990s, but a pivotal shift occurred in 2006 with the launch of Amazon Web Services (AWS), which moved the world toward cloud computing. The most recent acceleration began with the 2022 release of ChatGPT, which triggered a surge in demand for high-density computing clusters and specialized GPUs capable of handling AI workloads.

This transition from specialized assets to essential utilities has created a symbiotic relationship between the AI boom and physical infrastructure. The requirement for immense processing power has led to massive new demands for energy and cooling. These requirements are no longer just technical hurdles for operators; they are now impacting national power grids and driving regional economic development in emerging tech hubs.

As the industry scales to meet AI's appetite, the focus remains on balancing rapid capacity expansion with energy sustainability. While the shift toward hyperscale efficiency is evident, the pressure on power grids suggests that the next phase of growth will depend on how effectively providers can integrate new cooling technologies and sustainable energy sources to support the next generation of high-density computing.
