U.S. Navy Moves Sailor Personnel and Promotion Records to Cloud

The U.S. Navy has migrated sailors' official military personnel files and promotion records to a cloud-based environment. This transition marks a significant shift away from legacy on-premises hardware to modernize how the service manages its human resources data.

Coordinated by the Office of the Chief of Naval Personnel (CNP), the migration involved moving critical records and more than 50 associated applications from an aging physical data center located in Millington, Tennessee. Vice Adm. Jeffrey Czerewko identified the move as an initial step in a broader modernization effort for the Navy's personnel systems.

The Push for Cloud Modernization

This transition aligns with a wider Department of Defense strategy to aggressively migrate legacy systems to the cloud. The DoD has sought to prevent critical data from becoming "trapped" on hardwired, obsolete networks that are difficult to maintain and update. By shifting these assets, the Navy ensures that personnel data remains fluid and accessible rather than locked in decaying physical infrastructure.
