Anthropic Secures $9.1 Billion Infrastructure Deal With Bitcoin Miner Riot Platforms

The 20-year agreement provides the AI lab with massive power capacity in Texas as crypto miners pivot to AI compute.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 13, 2026

AI startup Anthropic has signed a 20-year cloud infrastructure agreement with Riot Platforms to secure the massive power and space required for its next generation of models. The deal, which runs through June 2048, underscores the race among frontier AI labs to lock down physical energy assets.

Under the terms of the agreement, Anthropic will receive 191 megawatts (MW) of IT capacity at Riot Platforms' campus in Rockdale, Texas. The initial contract is valued at $9.1 billion, though it includes two five-year extension options that could potentially increase the total value to approximately $16.1 billion. The rollout of the capacity will be phased, with 96MW expected to be online by December 2027 and the full 191MW delivered by June 2028. To facilitate the build-out, Morgan Stanley is providing a $573 million interim financing facility to cover the site's development costs.

The Pivot to AI Infrastructure

This partnership highlights a growing trend where Bitcoin mining operations are repurposing their industrial footprints for artificial intelligence. As AI labs scale, the demand for specialized data centers and high-voltage power allocations has outpaced available supply. Bitcoin miners are uniquely positioned to fill this void because they already control the sprawling industrial sites and high-capacity power connections necessary for large-scale compute clusters.

For Riot Platforms, the shift represents a strategic move toward financial stability. By leasing its power capacity to an AI giant, the company creates a long-term, contracted revenue stream that is significantly less volatile than the fluctuating price of Bitcoin. This transition allows the company to leverage existing electrical infrastructure to capture the high-margin demand of the AI sector while diversifying its core business model.

Strategic Implications

For Anthropic, the deal is a critical defensive and offensive move. Securing nearly 200MW of dedicated power allows the company to maintain its competitive pace against rivals like Google and OpenAI, who are similarly aggressive in their infrastructure acquisitions. In the current AI arms race, the bottleneck is no longer just algorithmic efficiency, but the raw physical ability to power the hardware.

What to Watch

Industry observers will now look to see if other major miners follow Riot's lead in converting their assets into AI hubs. While the Rockdale campus is now a cornerstone of Anthropic's physical strategy, the speed of the 2027 and 2028 delivery milestones will be the primary indicator of whether these repurposed crypto-sites can meet the rigorous technical demands of frontier AI training. The success of this model could trigger a broader migration of energy-intensive industrial assets toward the AI economy.
