BYD Denza Z9S Opens Pre-Orders With Record 1,100-km Electric Range
The luxury sedan sets a new mass-production benchmark to eliminate range anxiety with ultra-fast charging.
BYD’s premium sub-brand, Denza, opened pre-orders for the Z9S luxury electric sedan on August 3, 2026. The vehicle enters the market with a record-breaking range for a mass-produced EV, signaling a shift in the competitive landscape for high-end electric mobility.
The Z9S claims a maximum range of 1,100 km under the China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), surpassing the previous record of 1,036 km held by the Denza Z9GT. The sedan is available in three range configurations—780 km, 920 km, and 1,100 km—all of which utilize a 102.3 kWh battery pack. To support this capacity, the Z9S features ultra-fast charging capabilities that can take the battery from 10% to 70% in five minutes, and up to 97% in nine minutes.
Engineering and Performance
Positioned as a "tech luxury smart sedan," the Z9S is built on a substantial frame measuring 5,090 mm in length with a 3,025 mm wheelbase. To maintain agility despite its size, the vehicle incorporates rear-wheel steering, allowing for a minimum turning radius of 4.75 meters.
Performance figures for the top-tier model are aggressive. The tri-motor all-wheel-drive version delivers a combined output of 890 kW, or approximately 1,194 hp, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 2.68 seconds. The vehicle also integrates BYD's second-generation Blade Battery and the God's Eye 5.0 assisted driving system to compete with tech-forward rivals like the Xiaomi SU7 and Xpeng P7.
Market Implications
By pushing the range threshold to 1,100 km, BYD is attempting to fundamentally diminish "range anxiety" for luxury buyers. Li Hui, General Manager of Denza, stated that this range is "not meant to be remembered, but to be forgotten," suggesting that owners could potentially go half a month between charges.
The pricing strategy further intensifies competition in the Chinese market. Pre-sales are structured into three tiers: the Premium version at 319,800 yuan ($47,100), the Flagship at 349,800 yuan, and the Performance version at 389,800 yuan. This combination of high-end specifications and competitive pricing puts direct pressure on both traditional luxury marques and new entrants from the tech sector.

As the Z9S moves toward full delivery, the industry will be watching to see if the 1,100-km CLTC claim translates into meaningful real-world utility for consumers.
