Hyundai Targets 40,000 Sales for New IONIQ 3 Compact EV in 2027
The automaker is expanding its electric lineup with a cost-effective B-segment hatch tailored for the European market.
Hyundai is preparing to launch the IONIQ 3, its first B-segment electric vehicle, as part of a strategic push to capture the European compact car market. The company has set an ambitious sales target of over 40,000 units for 2027.
Mass production of the new model began in mid-August 2026 at Hyundai's manufacturing plant in Izmit, Turkey. Orders are expected to open during the second half of 2026. To keep the vehicle affordable, Hyundai utilized a 400-volt E-GMP architecture, a cost-saving departure from the 800-volt systems found in its more expensive Ioniq models. In the UK, base pricing for the Standard Range model is listed at £22,245, which is approximately $29,800.
A Strategic Shift in Architecture
The IONIQ 3 is designed as a subcompact "Aero Hatch" to fill a critical gap in Hyundai's current EV portfolio. By targeting the B-segment—which currently accounts for roughly 15% of total sales in Europe—Hyundai is positioning itself for a market where electric vehicle share is projected to climb to 65% by 2035.
Technical specifications for the vehicle include two battery configurations. The standard range option features a 42.2 kWh battery providing up to 213-214 miles of range under WLTP testing. For those requiring more distance, an extended range 61 kWh battery is available, pushing the WLTP range up to 308 miles. Additionally, the IONIQ 3 serves as the debut for the Pleos Connect infotainment system, which is based on Android Automotive OS.
Democratizing EV Technology
This launch represents a broader effort by Hyundai to democratize its electric technology by offering a lower-cost entry point for urban drivers. The move is a direct response to the growing demand for smaller, efficient vehicles in densely populated European cities.
Hyundai Motor Group CEO Chung Euisun emphasized the importance of the rollout, stating that the company must prioritize quality from the early stages of mass production. He specifically noted that regarding safety, the company must ensure the IONIQ 3 is recognized as the best vehicle in Europe.
Market Outlook
As the company moves toward its 2027 sales goals, the industry will be watching how the 400-volt architecture affects charging speeds and consumer adoption compared to the brand's premium offerings. While the vehicle is specifically tailored for Europe, the company has not yet confirmed the final global distribution plan for all regions. The primary focus remains on establishing a dominant footprint in the European B-segment before the end of the decade.
