Tesla FSD v14 Lite Rollout Linked to HW3 Computer Overheating Reports

Tesla owners with Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles are reporting a spike in Autopilot computer overheating alerts and hardware failures following the wide release of FSD v14 'Lite'. The software, designed to bring newer AI behaviors to older hardware, appears to be pushing memory-constrained computers to their thermal limits.
On July 21, Tesla pushed FSD v14 Lite to a wide release via software version 2026.20.6.11 (FSD v14.3.6). Since the rollout, users have reported the specific service-mode fault 'APP_w141_ECU_Thermal_Issue', which triggers when the computer board exceeds 90°C. Some owners have measured temperatures as high as 96°C. These thermal alerts manifest as 'red hands' on the vehicle display, resulting in forced FSD disengagement and a 'selfDrivingUnavailable' state, according to reports from Electrek.
The Hardware Gap
The issue stems from a significant disparity between Tesla's hardware generations. HW3 computers are equipped with 8GB of RAM and possess approximately one-eighth of the memory bandwidth found in the newer HW4 systems. To bridge this gap, Tesla developed v14 Lite by distilling the HW4 model into a smaller footprint, attempting to maintain performance on the older AI3 chips. However, the increased computational load of the newer model may be exacerbating existing thermal vulnerabilities in the older hardware.
Industry Implications
This development transforms a performance gap into a potential liability crisis. Tesla has previously admitted that HW3 cannot deliver the unsupervised self-driving capabilities originally promised to customers. If software updates are actively accelerating the degradation of HW3 hardware, the company could face a massive warranty crisis involving roughly 4 million vehicles. This could force Tesla into an expensive hardware retrofit program or leave them vulnerable to lawsuits from owners whose vehicles are becoming unreliable or incapable of running the software they purchased.
