BYD fills mid-range gap with Great Seagull electric hatchback

BYD is expanding its electric vehicle lineup in China with the introduction of the Great Seagull, a new hatchback designed to capture the mid-range budget market. The vehicle arrives as a larger, more capable sibling to the company's entry-level Seagull model.
Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean network sales division, officially announced the launch of the Great Seagull (Da Haiou) during the Chengdu Auto Show 2026. According to Zhang, the new electric hatchback will be released in China this year. The vehicle is engineered with a single electric motor delivering 127hp (95 kW), positioning it as a more powerful alternative to the base Seagull while remaining more accessible than the Dolphin.
Strategic Lineup Expansion
The Great Seagull is a key addition to BYD's Ocean series, a product line the company uses to aggressively target diverse consumer segments.
