BYD fills mid-range gap with Great Seagull electric hatchback

The new Da Haiou slots between the budget Seagull and the larger Dolphin to squeeze budget EV rivals.

BYD is expanding its electric vehicle lineup in China with the introduction of the Great Seagull, a new hatchback designed to capture the mid-range budget market. The vehicle arrives as a larger, more capable sibling to the company's entry-level Seagull model.

Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean network sales division, officially announced the launch of the Great Seagull (Da Haiou) during the Chengdu Auto Show 2026. According to Zhang, the new electric hatchback will be released in China this year. The vehicle is engineered with a single electric motor delivering 127hp (95 kW), positioning it as a more powerful alternative to the base Seagull while remaining more accessible than the Dolphin.

Strategic Lineup Expansion

The Great Seagull is a key addition to BYD's Ocean series, a product line the company uses to aggressively target diverse consumer segments. Currently, the Ocean series relies on the Seagull to attract first-time EV buyers with an affordable price point, while the Dolphin serves as a higher-tier offering for those seeking more premium features and space.

By slotting the Great Seagull between these two models in both size and price, BYD is addressing a specific market void. The new model provides a mid-sized option for urban drivers who find the standard Seagull too restrictive but do not require the full dimensions or cost of the Dolphin. This granular approach to vehicle sizing allows BYD to maximize its reach across different household budgets and utility needs.

Market Implications

This launch underscores BYD's broader strategy of "filling the gaps" within its portfolio to maintain dominance in the Chinese EV landscape. By offering a highly specific range of price points and sizes, the company can effectively squeeze competitors and prevent rivals from finding an opening in the budget-to-mid-range transition.

Industry analysts view the Great Seagull as a direct challenge to other domestic manufacturers. Specifically, the vehicle is positioned as a primary competitor for the Geely EX2. As BYD continues to scale its volume, the ability to offer a tailored vehicle for every single niche in the hatchback segment strengthens its position as a global leader in EV production.

Future Outlook

While the Great Seagull is confirmed for a China launch this year, the industry is now watching for official pricing and battery range specifications. Given BYD's history of rapid international expansion, observers are also monitoring whether the Great Seagull will eventually join the Seagull and Dolphin in overseas markets to challenge low-cost EV competitors globally.
