Stellantis Delays Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500 EREVs
Powertrain hurdles push back the launch of high-margin extended-range electric models for the automaker's flagship brands.
Stellantis is pushing back the launch of its extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500. The delays affect two of the company's most critical high-margin segments as it struggles to finalize a new plug-in hybrid system.
Production for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Hybrid, originally slated to begin in May, has been rescheduled for November. Similarly, the Ram 1500 EREV—marketed as the Ramcharger—is reportedly delayed until mid-April. While the EREV faces these setbacks, a Ram spokesperson confirmed that plans remain on track for the arrival of the fully electric Ram 1500 REV in 2027.
The EREV Architecture
The extended-range powertrain is designed to bridge the gap between traditional hybrids and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Unlike standard hybrids, the EREV system utilizes a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that does not power the wheels directly. Instead, the engine functions exclusively as an onboard generator to charge a 400-volt battery, which then drives the electric motors. This configuration is specifically intended for heavy-duty applications where towing capacity and range anxiety are primary concerns for consumers.
Strategic Implications
These delays underscore the technical complexity of deploying a new powertrain architecture across flagship luxury and utility lines. For Stellantis, the Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500 are vital for maintaining profitability during the transition to electrification. By pivoting toward EREVs, the company aims to capture buyers who are not yet ready to commit to full BEVs but want to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in large-format vehicles.
However, the timing is precarious. As competitors accelerate the rollout of their own hybrid and electric trucks and SUVs, repeated delays to these high-profile models could erode market share. The inability to hit initial production targets suggests a challenging calibration period for the new series plug-in hybrid system.
Looking Ahead
Industry observers will be watching to see if the November target for the Grand Wagoneer holds or if further technical hurdles emerge. While the Ramcharger's mid-April window provides a clearer target, the discrepancy between the EREV and the 2027 REV timeline highlights a staggered approach to electrification. The company must now ensure a smooth rollout to avoid further damaging consumer confidence in its electrification roadmap.
