DAF and Einride Partner for First EU Level 4 Autonomous Truck Approval

The collaboration integrates Einride's autonomous driving system into DAF's premium electric heavy trucks to clear a critical regulatory hurdle.

DAF Trucks and Swedish autonomy firm Einride have partnered to integrate Level 4 autonomous driving technology into electric heavy-duty freight platforms. The move aims to create the first commercially available autonomous truck to clear stringent European Union regulatory hurdles.

Under the agreement, DAF will integrate the "Einride Driver" system into its premium "X" brand of electric trucks, specifically targeting the XG and XG+ Electric models. The primary objective is to achieve type-approval under EU Regulation 2022/1426. Since the establishment of this regulation in 2022, no commercial vehicle has successfully cleared the requirements for Level 4 autonomy in the EU.

The Regulatory Race

The push for Level 4 approval comes as the logistics industry grapples with chronic driver shortages and volatile fuel costs. While Einride has previously deployed autonomous trucks on public roads in Belgium and private roads in Ohio, moving from pilot programs to mass commercialization requires the manufacturing scale of a major original equipment manufacturer (OEM). DAF, a subsidiary of PACCAR, provides the industrial capacity and vehicle platforms necessary to scale the technology.

"By leveraging DAF’s decades of manufacturing excellence and market strength, we can expedite the global scale-up of Einride’s autonomous technology," said Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Einride. Jeroen van den Oetelaar, DAF Trucks’ Chief Engineer and board member, described the collaboration as a testament to the company's commitment to future-proofing the logistics sector.

Industry Implications

Bridging the gap between software capability and legal approval is the current bottleneck for the autonomous freight industry. If successful, this partnership would establish the first legally approved L4 autonomous heavy-duty truck in the EU, potentially unlocking significant efficiency gains for long-haul logistics and reducing the industry's reliance on a shrinking labor pool.

The financial stakes are high for the technology provider. Einride, which went public on the Nasdaq (ENRD) in June 2026, reported approximately $45 million in trailing twelve-month revenue and $146 million in net losses as of mid-2026. Securing a path to regulatory approval through a partner like PACCAR is a critical step toward financial sustainability and market penetration.

What's Next

The industry is now watching to see if the DAF-Einride integration can satisfy the technical and safety requirements of EU Regulation 2022/1426. While the software is already operational in limited environments, the transition to a certified, mass-produced vehicle platform represents the final hurdle before autonomous electric freight can move from experimental fleets to standard European highways.
