WETOX D2 Adapter Adds V2L Power to Millions of Legacy EVs
The company has earned the first ISO 15118-20 certification for its new adapter targeting Tesla and Ford models.
WETOX has launched the D2 power adapter via Kickstarter, enabling electric vehicles without native bidirectional power to function as mobile energy sources. The device allows owners of millions of legacy EVs to power external appliances directly from their vehicle's battery via the native DC charge port.
The D2 specifically targets Tesla models using the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles using CCS1 and CCS2 connectors. In a significant regulatory milestone, WETOX announced that the D2 has earned the world's first ISO 15118-20 certification report from SGS. This certification covers the next-generation V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication protocol, ensuring the adapter meets rigorous international standards for communication between the vehicle and the external load.
The Hardware Gap in Mass-Market EVs
Many of the most popular electric vehicles on the road today, including early iterations of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, were shipped without vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities. While these cars possess massive battery packs, the hardware was designed for one-way energy flow—from the grid into the car. This limitation prevents users from utilizing their vehicles as power stations for camping, outdoor professional work, or emergency home backup.
WETOX, which previously developed adapters for the GB/T standard, designed the D2 to bridge this gap for the North American and European markets. To achieve its performance, the company utilizes high-efficiency silicon carbide (SiC) power components, which WETOX claims results in higher efficiency compared to other V2L adapters currently available on the market.
Implications for the EV Ecosystem
Standardizing V2X communication is considered a critical step for the broader adoption of electric vehicles as integrated energy assets. By providing a certified hardware solution for existing fleets, WETOX is effectively retrofitting millions of vehicles to serve as portable power grids without requiring owners to upgrade to newer, more expensive models.
