Dodge Unveils Gas-Powered 2027 Charger PPV for Law Enforcement
The next-generation police pursuit vehicle eschews electrification in favor of a twin-turbo inline-six engine.
Dodge has revealed a prototype of the 2027 Charger Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV), confirming that the next generation of its law enforcement staple will remain powered by gasoline. The reveal took place at the Police Fleet Expo 2026 at Daytona International Speedway, signaling a strategic pivot for the brand's fleet operations.
Under the hood, the Charger PPV utilizes the standard-output 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Hurricane I6 engine. Based on civilian R/T specifications, this powertrain delivers 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. To ensure maximum stability and traction during high-speed intercepts, all-wheel drive (AWD) is expected to be standard equipment across the PPV line. The vehicle also features a specialized interior designed for duty, including the removal of the center console to accommodate police gear and a dedicated divider to separate the rear passenger compartment from the cargo hatch.
The Shift from Electric
For several years, the automotive industry has pushed toward electrification, and Dodge has followed suit with its civilian "Sixpack" and electric lineups. While the company teased an electric pursuit prototype in 2024, the 2026 Expo reveal confirms that internal combustion remains the priority for the PPV. This decision addresses critical concerns among law enforcement agencies regarding the current state of EV charging infrastructure and the demanding requirements of rural patrol duties, where range anxiety and charging downtime are significant operational risks.
Industry Implications
By maintaining a gasoline-powered option, Dodge secures its dominant position in the police fleet market against primary competitors Ford and General Motors. The move ensures that agencies can maintain pursuit capabilities without relying on an underdeveloped electrical grid. Dodge CEO Matt McAlear emphasized the importance of this continuity, stating, "It’s absolutely part of the plan... It’s always taken a Charger to catch a Charger, and it’s not something we’re walking away from."
Path to Production
Dodge is now moving into the validation phase to ensure the vehicle meets the rigorous demands of police work. CEO Matt McAlear confirmed that the company is actively collaborating with the General Services Administration (GSA), the California Highway Patrol, and the Michigan State Police to establish the official pursuit standards for the new model. If these collaborations proceed as planned, Dodge is targeting summer 2027 to open orders for the Charger PPV.
