Hyundai, Ford and Stellantis Pivot to Gas-Powered Range Extenders

Major automakers are integrating onboard generators to combat range anxiety and bridge the gap to full electrification.

Major automotive manufacturers are shifting their electrification strategies by introducing larger electric vehicles equipped with onboard gas-powered generators. Companies including Hyundai, Ford, and Stellantis are developing these range-extender systems to generate electricity and charge batteries while driving, specifically to mitigate consumer range anxiety.

These systems, known as Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs), use a small internal combustion engine not to drive the wheels directly, but to act as a generator. Stellantis has already confirmed a range-extender option for the Ram 1500 EV, noting that its STLA Frame platform is designed to support such technology. Similarly, Hyundai is developing EREVs that utilize gasoline engines to top up batteries on the go, while Ford has patented range-extender technology specifically for its electric pickup lineup, including the F-150.

The Infrastructure Gap

Range anxiety—the fear that a vehicle will run out of power before reaching a charging station—remains a primary barrier to the mass adoption of electric vehicles. This is particularly acute for larger vehicles, such as pickups and SUVs, which require more energy for long-distance travel. While battery chemistry and capacity continue to improve, the rollout of fast-charging infrastructure has not kept pace with consumer demand across all regions, leaving a gap in reliability for long-haul trips.

A Strategic Industry Pivot

The re-emergence of range-extended electric vehicles suggests that the automotive industry is acknowledging a slower transition to pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) than previously projected. By integrating a small engine solely for power generation, manufacturers can offer the torque and driving experience of an EV combined with the refueling convenience of a traditional gas car. This hybrid approach is designed to accelerate adoption among skeptical buyers who are not yet ready to rely entirely on a charging grid.

The Road Ahead

As these vehicles hit the market, the industry will be watching to see if REEVs serve as a permanent niche or a temporary bridge. While the technology solves the immediate problem of range, it maintains a reliance on fossil fuels and adds mechanical complexity to the powertrain. The success of these models will likely depend on whether charging infrastructure improves rapidly enough to make the onboard generator redundant, or if consumers continue to prioritize the security of a gas tank over a purely electric drivetrain.
