Rivian Unifies R1 Fleet with RivianOS 2 Software Rollout

Rivian has launched a major over-the-air software update that brings the RivianOS 2 platform to its entire R1 vehicle fleet. The rollout ensures that both Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1S and R1T models now share the same software stack as the newer R2 model.

Designated as version 2026.31, the update introduces a comprehensive overhaul of the infotainment experience. Key additions include a redesigned interface, updated controls, a new settings menu, and a universal search field. The update also expands utility through new integrations, including a dedicated weather app and the ability to manipulate trip routing via the mobile app. Furthermore, Google Maps and Waze now provide alerts for speed cameras and police presence.

Technical Implementation

While the software stack is now unified, Rivian has maintained different graphics engines based on hardware capabilities to ensure performance. Gen 2 R1 and R2 vehicles utilize Unreal Engine 5 for their graphics. However, Gen 1 vehicles will continue to use Unreal Engine 4, a decision Rivian made to maintain screen responsiveness on older hardware.

Rivian described the move as a complete rebuild of the R1 experience on an "AI-defined platform designed from the ground up," which allows for deeper compute integration within the cabin and state-of-the-art graphics.

Industry Implications

This unification addresses a growing challenge for EV manufacturers: preventing early adopters from feeling their hardware has become obsolete as newer models launch. Rivian's software chief, Wassym Bensaid, had previously signaled the intent to unify the fleet's software to streamline development.

By merging the R1 and R2 platforms into a single stack, Rivian eliminates the need to maintain separate evolutionary branches for different vehicle generations. This allows the company to deploy future feature updates and UI enhancements across the entire fleet simultaneously, reducing engineering overhead and ensuring a consistent user experience regardless of the vehicle's production year.

With the entire lineup now powered by RivianOS 2, the company is positioned to accelerate the deployment of AI-driven features across its fleet.
