Kia launches 2027 EV3 in US with aggressive $29,890 starting price

The compact electric SUV matches the price of the Niro Hybrid and replaces the more expensive Niro EV.

Kia has introduced the 2027 EV3 compact electric SUV to the U.S. market with a starting price of $29,890. The move signals a strategic shift to lower the barrier to entry for dedicated electric vehicles and streamline the company's domestic lineup.

The 2027 EV3 enters the market at $29,890, excluding a $1,495 delivery fee. This pricing creates direct parity with the refreshed 2027 Niro Hybrid, which also starts at $29,890. Most notably, the EV3 significantly undercuts the 2026 Niro EV, which carried a starting price of $39,700. As a result of this launch, Kia is retiring the all-electric version of the Niro entirely.

A Shift to Dedicated Platforms

Unlike the Niro EV, which relied on a modified internal combustion engine platform, the EV3 is built on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). This dedicated electric architecture allows for optimized battery placement and interior space. The EV3 has already established a footprint in the United Kingdom and European markets before its arrival in the United States, where it is positioned to compete with established affordable EVs like the Nissan LEAF and Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Removing the Electric Premium

By pricing a dedicated EV at the same level as a hybrid, Kia is attempting to eliminate the "electric premium"—the higher upfront cost that frequently deters mainstream buyers from switching to battery power. This aggressive pricing strategy suggests that Kia is prioritizing mass adoption and volume over high per-unit margins for its entry-level electric offerings. Furthermore, removing the Niro EV eliminates internal competition, ensuring that buyers seeking an affordable electric SUV are directed toward the more technologically advanced E-GMP platform.

Market Implications

Industry observers will be watching to see if this pricing pressure forces other manufacturers to lower the cost of their entry-level EVs to remain competitive. While the EV3 provides a more affordable path to electrification, the long-term success of the model will depend on its ability to attract buyers who previously viewed the $39,000+ price point of the Niro EV as a deterrent. For now, Kia has effectively consolidated its compact SUV strategy, leaving the Niro to handle hybrid demand while the EV3 spearheads the brand's affordable electric expansion.
