NHTSA Upgrades Ford Engine Probe to Engineering Analysis Over Timing Belt Failures

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has upgraded a defect investigation into an engineering analysis involving approximately 135,551 Ford vehicles. The agency determined that these vehicles pose an "unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety" due to the degradation of timing belt materials.
The investigation focuses on Ford Fiesta, Focus, and EcoSport models from 2014 to 2021 equipped with 1.0L engines. According to NHTSA, the timing belt material degrades over time, creating debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen. This blockage reduces engine oil pressure, which can lead to a complete or partial loss of motive power or total engine seizure while the vehicle is in motion. To date, the agency has received 355 reports of low engine oil pressure warnings followed by power loss.
The Maintenance Gap
Data analyzed by the NHTSA reveals a significant discrepancy between manufacturer guidelines and real-world failures. While the suggested timing belt replacement interval was 150,000 miles, 98% of the reported failures occurred before that milestone. The average failure mileage was found to be approximately 70,000 miles, suggesting the components are failing far earlier than anticipated.
In response to these issues, Ford implemented a non-safety customer satisfaction program in June for global vehicles using the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program reduced the recommended maintenance interval to 100,000 miles or six years and provided reimbursements for certain repairs. However, the affected models—the Fiesta, Focus, and EcoSport—have since been discontinued by the company.
Regulatory Implications
The transition to an engineering analysis is a critical step in the federal regulatory process. This phase allows NHTSA to conduct a more rigorous technical evaluation of the failure rates and the information provided by Ford.
