Volkswagen Sets Aero Records With Mission Efficiency Prototype

Volkswagen has unveiled the Mission Efficiency, a near-production electric coupe prototype that has set three world records for aerodynamics and energy consumption. The vehicle serves as a proof of concept for extreme efficiency using affordable, large-scale production technology.

The prototype achieved a record-breaking drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.158 for road-approved cars, a result of its distinct teardrop shape and advanced aerodynamic optimizations. In terms of energy use, the vehicle recorded an "ideal trip" consumption of 6.48 kWh/100 km while maintaining a constant speed of 68 km/h. These figures establish a new benchmark for how streamlined a road-legal electric vehicle can be.

A Legacy of Economy

The Mission Efficiency is positioned as the spiritual successor to the 2013 Volkswagen XL1, which held the title of the most economical production car of its era. However, while many concept cars rely on exotic or prohibitively expensive materials, this prototype is built on the MEB+ platform. It utilizes production technology intended for the upcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross models, including a 54.9 kWh battery and a 99 kW motor. This approach allows Volkswagen to test high-end efficiency within the constraints of mass-market hardware.

Impact on Mass Production

The project demonstrates that significant aerodynamic gains can be achieved without relying on specialist, low-volume prototypes. According to Volkswagen, the Mission Efficiency reduces energy consumption by more than 30% compared to the standard ID. Polo at speeds above 80 km/h.
