WeRide enters Nordic market via GreenMobility robotaxi partnership in Denmark

Chinese autonomous driving company WeRide has partnered with Danish electric mobility provider GreenMobility to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Denmark. The move marks WeRide's first entry into the Nordic region and represents the company's sixth market expansion within Europe.

Pending regulatory approvals, the partners plan to deploy commercial services in the first half of 2027. The fleet will utilize the GXR, WeRide's EU-compliant Level 4 autonomous robotaxi van. To facilitate the rollout, WeRide is leveraging GreenMobility’s established infrastructure; the provider currently operates the largest free-floating car-sharing network in the Nordic region, managing a fleet of more than 1,500 electric vehicles.

Strategic European Expansion

This venture is part of an aggressive growth strategy to establish a footprint across the European continent. WeRide has recently expanded into Slovakia, Switzerland, and Spain, adding to its existing operations in France and Belgium.

To minimize the high costs associated with entering new international markets, WeRide employs an "asset-light" business model. By partnering with local operators like GreenMobility, the company can utilize existing fleet management systems and established user channels rather than building a ground-up operational network in every new city.

Implications for Global Autonomy

The partnership signals a broader trend of Chinese autonomous vehicle (AV) firms pivoting toward European markets as domestic competition within China intensifies. For WeRide, Denmark serves as a critical test case for scaling Level 4 autonomy across diverse urban settings and varying regulatory environments.

"By combining WeRide’s autonomous driving technology with GreenMobility’s local operating capabilities, we are establishing a scalable model for deploying autonomous mobility in new international markets," said Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide. Kasper Gjedsted, CEO of the GreenMobility Group, noted that the partnership allows the company to apply its experience from millions of shared car trips directly into a new growth phase of autonomous mobility.

The Road Ahead

While the partnership is formalized, the timeline for the 2027 launch remains dependent on securing the necessary regulatory approvals from Danish authorities. Observers will be watching to see if this "asset-light" partnership model allows WeRide to accelerate its rollout across the rest of the Nordics or if regulatory hurdles in the region slow the pace of deployment.
