Zürich Airport Deploys L4 Autonomous Shuttles for Employee Transport

Zürich Airport has launched two fully automated electric shuttle buses to transport employees, marking a significant step in the integration of Level 4 (L4) autonomy at a major European aviation hub. The deployment removes the need for on-board safety drivers, shifting oversight to remote operators.

Developed by the Chinese company WeRide, the vehicles—known as "Robobuses"—each have a capacity for nine passengers. These shuttles operate on a defined route connecting the employee entrance at gate 101 to the maintenance area at gate 130, specifically avoiding aircraft taxiways to ensure safety. While there are no monitors on board, the vehicles are supervised from a dedicated control cockpit by trained personnel from partner companies Swissport and Krummen Kerzers.

Operational Timeline and Context

The project entered the preparation phase in March 2025, culminating in the start of fully automated trips in early September 2026. This deployment builds on WeRide's previous experience in Europe, which included providing a shuttle service during the 2024 French Open in Paris. By utilizing L4 autonomy, the airport is testing a model where human intervention is not required for the vehicle to complete its journey, provided it remains within its designated operational design domain.

Addressing Labor Shortages

The move toward automation is driven largely by the logistical challenges facing the aviation industry. Coralie Klaus Boecker, Head of the ZRH Innovation Hub at Flughafen Zürich AG, noted that the gradual automation of vehicles can make an important contribution to airports given the emerging shortage of skilled workers.

This shift represents a transformation of labor rather than a total replacement of human workers. Raphaël Glaesener, Senior Innovation Manager at Flughafen Zürich AG, emphasized that automated driving does not mean people disappear, but rather that their tasks change. In this new model, a single remote operator can monitor multiple vehicles simultaneously, significantly increasing operational efficiency compared to traditional one-driver-per-vehicle staffing.

Future Implications

As one of the first instances of L4 autonomous driving at a large-scale European airport, the Zürich deployment serves as a blueprint for other hubs looking to optimize ground logistics. Observers will be watching to see if the system scales to more complex routes or expands to passenger-facing services. For now, the focus remains on the reliability of the remote monitoring system and the seamless integration of the Robobuses into the airport's existing employee transit infrastructure.
