AnTuTu V12 Shifts Scoring to Prioritize Real-World Performance

The benchmarking giant moves away from inflated peak scores to measure how devices actually behave in daily use.

AnTuTu has released a public beta for Version 12 of its benchmarking software, introducing a fundamental shift in how mobile performance is measured. The update moves away from chasing high, "flashy" numbers in favor of assessing real-world utility across CPU, GPU, Memory, and UX.

Because of these core changes to algorithms and scoring methods, results from Version 12 cannot be compared to Version 11 or any earlier iterations. The new version focuses on practical performance rather than maximum clock speeds or scores that resemble video game totals. To ensure consistency, AnTuTu has established standardized testing baselines for V12, requiring a room temperature of 79°F, battery levels above 80%, and a display brightness of 300 nits.

A New Approach to Hardware Testing

The technical changes in V12 target the specific ways hardware interacts with software. CPU benchmarks have been redesigned to measure how effectively a System on a Chip (SoC) switches between high-frequency power bursts and low-frequency efficiency modes. This provides a clearer picture of power management and thermal throttling than simple peak-speed tests.

On the graphics side, GPU tests now incorporate a dynamic latency stress test to analyze memory behavior under varying workloads. Additionally, AnTuTu has introduced a memory fragmentation test. This specific metric measures how performance degrades as a device's storage fills up over time, a common pain point for long-term users that traditional benchmarks often ignore.

Combatting the "Benchmark Booster"

This pivot responds to a long-standing issue in the mobile industry: the use of "benchmark boosters." Historically, manufacturers have been accused of implementing software tricks to artificially inflate scores. These boosters often prevent CPU cores from idling or force maximum performance only when a benchmark app is detected, creating a gap between synthetic results and actual user experience.

By changing the scoring logic and introducing tests for latency and fragmentation, AnTuTu aims to discourage manufacturers from optimizing devices solely for the sake of a leaderboard. The goal is to force a shift toward optimization for the actual end-user, providing a more honest representation of how a smartphone performs during daily tasks.

The Path Forward

As V12 moves from beta to full release, the industry will be watching to see if other benchmarking tools follow suit with similar real-world metrics. While the lack of backward compatibility with V11 creates a temporary data gap for analysts, the move signals a broader trend toward transparency in hardware reporting. It remains to be seen how manufacturers will adjust their tuning strategies to meet these more stringent, behavior-based requirements.
