Apple enters foldable market with high-end iPhone Duo
The company's first foldable device blends a compact phone form factor with a 7.6-inch tablet display.
Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, marking the company's first venture into the foldable smartphone market. Positioned as a premium tool for productivity and tech enthusiasts, the device represents the most significant design departure for the iPhone since its 2007 debut.
Announced at a launch event in Cupertino, the iPhone Duo utilizes a dual-screen design that transitions from a compact handset to a tablet-like device. The hardware features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch unfolded interior display. To address common foldable pain points, Apple equipped the interior screen with a matte finish designed to reduce reflections and minimize the visibility of the screen crease.
Under the hood, the device is powered by the A20 Pro chip and fully supports Siri AI and Apple Intelligence. The camera system consists of dual 48MP Fusion cameras (Main and Ultra Wide), though it lacks the variable aperture found in the iPhone 18 Pro. Versatility is a core focus of the design; the device supports multiple configurations, including a laptop-like mode and a "tent" standing mode.
A Shift in Strategy
Apple's entry into the foldable space comes years after Android competitors, specifically Samsung and Google, established the category. By moving away from the traditional slab form factor to a "passport-shaped" foldable, Apple is attempting to validate the form factor for a broader audience. The company is leveraging deep hardware-software synergy, including seamless app mirroring between the two screens and a robust hinge mechanism, to transform the foldable from an early-adopter novelty into a viable professional tool.
Market Implications
Despite the technical leap, the iPhone Duo carries a steep price tag that may restrict its reach. Pricing begins at $1,999 for the 256GB model and scales up to $3,199 for the 2TB version. This aggressive pricing strategy suggests Apple is targeting a niche luxury and enthusiast market rather than the mass consumer base. As Andrew Griffin of The Independent noted regarding the experience, "I still don’t know why I would want to fold my iPhone – but I know now that I very much do want to fold it."
Availability
Consumers can begin pre-ordering the iPhone Duo on October 16, with general availability following on October 23. Industry analysts will now be watching to see if the high entry cost deters adoption or if the integration of Apple Intelligence provides enough utility to justify the premium.
