Paying a premium for high-end USB-C cables does not guarantee faster charging for every smartphone. A recent test demonstrates that for many devices, a budget-friendly cable performs identically to an expensive, high-specification alternative.
In a trial conducted by MakeUseOf, a $5 off-brand USB-C cable was pitted against a $30 high-end 100W cable using a Samsung Galaxy S23. The results showed nearly identical performance: both cables took between 40 and 45 minutes to charge the device from 20% to 80%. The disparity in price provided no measurable benefit in charging speed for this specific hardware.
The technical ceiling
The lack of performance difference is rooted in how power draw is managed. The Samsung Galaxy S23 requires a maximum of 25W for charging, meaning a basic 3A USB-C cable is sufficient to handle the load. Because the phone determines the power draw—not the cable—the extra capacity of a 100W cable remains unused.
USB-C standardization involves various protocols, including USB-C Power Delivery (PD) and Programmable Power Supply (PPS), alongside proprietary technologies like Oppo's SUPERVOOC. This complexity often leads consumers to believe that the most expensive cable is the safest or fastest choice, regardless of the device being used. Technically, cables without an e-marker chip typically cap out at 60W; only cables exceeding this wattage require an e-marker chip to signal safe power handling to the connected devices.
Why it matters
Many consumers overspend on accessories under the assumption that higher wattage or brand-name labels automatically improve charging efficiency. However, when the cable's specifications far exceed the device's maximum intake, the consumer is paying for "overkill" specs that provide no functional advantage.
