Dubai Launches 'Click & Travel' to Bring Passport Control to Passengers
GDRFA Dubai is deploying mobile biometric verification to eliminate airport queues by moving officers to the passengers.
The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) has launched "Click & Travel," a mobile passport control service designed to eliminate traditional airport queues. The initiative shifts the border control model by allowing officers to process travelers at their actual location within the terminal rather than at fixed kiosks.
Launched on September 7, 2026, the service utilizes mobile devices integrated with biometric verification to complete entry and departure procedures. According to GDRFA Dubai, these transactions are processed in approximately 12 to 15 seconds. The service is available for both arrival and departure procedures and covers UAE nationals, UAE residents, GCC nationals, and visitors. The efficiency of the system was demonstrated during a second-phase pilot operation running from May to August 31, 2026, which saw approximately 31,373 transactions completed.
Redesigning the Passenger Experience
This deployment is part of a broader strategic effort by Dubai to enhance its "smart ports" ecosystem. By decoupling passport control from static service points, airport authorities can now dynamically allocate security resources based on real-time passenger traffic and operational pressure. This flexibility is particularly critical during peak travel periods and emergency situations where traditional bottlenecks often occur.
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, noted that the service ensures that instead of passengers searching for the service, the service comes to them, allowing procedures to be completed quickly and securely. Major General Talal Ahmed Al Shanqiti, Assistant Director General for Air Ports at GDRFA Dubai, added that the importance of the system lies in its ability to provide a faster response to operational movement and ensure smoother passenger flows.
A Shift in Border Logistics
The transition represents a fundamental shift from "passenger-to-service" to "service-to-passenger" logistics. By removing the requirement for travelers to stand in line at a specific gate or kiosk, Dubai is reducing the physical friction of international travel. This operational flexibility allows security teams to move to where the congestion is highest, effectively neutralizing bottlenecks before they disrupt airport operations.
The Future of Biometric Travel
As Dubai continues to integrate biometric technology into its infrastructure, "Click & Travel" positions the city as a leader in frictionless border management. The success of the pilot phase suggests a scalable model for other global hubs looking to optimize passenger throughput. Observers will now watch how the service scales during the busiest winter travel seasons and whether the mobile model eventually replaces fixed immigration desks entirely.
