Huawei Debuts Mate XT 2 Tri-Fold and Passport-Style Pura X View
The Chinese tech giant pushes hardware boundaries with a 'G-shape' foldable and a high-capacity passport-shaped device.
Huawei has unveiled two highly unconventional devices, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design and the Pura X View, signaling a bold push into specialized hardware form factors. Both devices are scheduled to launch in China in September 2026.
The Mate XT 2 evolves the tri-fold concept with a 10.2-inch flexible OLED display that utilizes a 'G' shape fold. Under the hood, the device is powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which Huawei claims delivers a 42% performance increase over the original Mate XT. A standout addition is a directional privacy display feature, a capability that mirrors a key feature of the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. This privacy screen is not standard across the lineup; it is an optional extra available exclusively on the high-end model featuring 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.
A Shift in Form Factors
This launch follows Huawei's introduction of the world's first tri-fold foldable, the Mate XT, in late 2024. While the first generation utilized a 'Z' shape fold, the Mate XT 2's transition to a 'G' shape represents a significant engineering shift in how the screen collapses and expands. Alongside the tri-fold, Huawei is experimenting with the Pura X View, a device designed with a non-standard 'passport' aspect ratio of 16:9.5. This device features a 6.39-inch OLED screen and a substantial 7000mAh battery to support its unique dimensions.
The Strategy of Specialization
By introducing tri-folds and passport-shaped handsets, Huawei is moving beyond the traditional smartphone slab and standard foldables. The integration of directional privacy pixels suggests a strategic effort to compete directly with Samsung's high-end Ultra series by offering niche, high-value hardware features. This approach indicates a broader industry trend where manufacturers are creating highly specialized hardware tiers to attract power users and professionals who require more screen real estate or enhanced privacy than a standard device can provide.
Market Outlook
As the September 2026 launch approaches, the industry will be watching to see if the 'G' shape fold proves more durable or intuitive than previous tri-fold attempts. While the battery and display specs for the Pura X View are set, some technical details remain in flux; specifically, camera specifications for the Pura X View have seen conflicting reports across different sources. Whether these experimental shapes can move from novelty to mainstream adoption will depend on how Huawei balances these aggressive designs with daily usability.
