New data from technology company Ookla ranks the High Peak as the worst area in Britain for mobile phone signal. This lack of connectivity is particularly acute for those in the farming industry, where mobile devices are essential for emergency communication. Andrew Critchlow, an NFU county adviser and sheep farmer in Edale, stated that the absence of signal for any phone company is "pretty dangerous" given the amount of lone working in the sector. Critchlow warned that if an accident or emergency occurs without a signal, it can put a worker's life at risk.

The National Park Conflict

The High Peak region in Derbyshire is a central part of the Peak District National Park. The area's rugged geography naturally complicates signal propagation, but the primary barrier to improvement is often social and regulatory. Efforts to expand the telecommunications network are frequently stalled by local resistance to new infrastructure.

Joanna Collins, a High Peak borough councillor from Edale, noted that while there have been proposals to install more mobile phone masts, such plans are often unpopular. According to Collins, residents are keen to preserve the special qualities and aesthetic of the national park, leading to a direct clash between the desire for landscape preservation and the need for modern infrastructure.

For rural workers, mobile connectivity has evolved from a convenience into a critical safety tool. Beyond emergency calls, farmers rely on connectivity for the operation of essential agricultural applications that manage livestock and land.
