Huawei has launched the Mate XT 2 tri-fold smartphone in China, debuting the new Kirin 9050 Pro system-on-a-chip (SoC). The release marks the company's first major high-performance homegrown smartphone processor in six years.

The new processor arrives in the Mate XT 2, a luxury tri-fold device with a starting price of approximately $2,980 (19,999 yuan). According to the Xinhua News Agency, the Kirin 9050 Pro is the first high-performance processor to utilize what is described as "logic folding technology."

This launch ends a prolonged drought in Huawei's high-end silicon development, the first such milestone since the era of the Kirin 9000. The gap follows years of severe US-led sanctions designed to restrict Huawei's access to advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Specifically, these measures targeted the company's ability to acquire extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines from the Dutch firm ASML, which are essential for producing the smallest and most efficient transistors.
