Qualcomm is in negotiations with Samsung Electronics to potentially dual-source the manufacturing of its upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Gen 6 Pro processors. The move would mark a significant shift in Qualcomm's supply chain strategy as the company navigates a tightening global market for 2nm semiconductor fabrication.
According to reports from CHOSUNBIZ and GSMArena, Qualcomm is currently discussing pricing, technical specifications, and process optimization with Samsung for 2nm production. While TSMC has served as the primary foundry for recent generations, the industry is facing a critical capacity bottleneck. TSMC has targeted a 2nm capacity of 60,000 wafers per month by the fourth quarter, but Apple has reportedly secured more than half of that total allocation, leaving limited room for other high-volume clients.
The Foundry Divide
This potential pivot comes after years of exclusivity with TSMC. Qualcomm shifted away from Samsung following the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which was plagued by overheating and power efficiency issues in the Galaxy S22 series. That era of instability pushed Qualcomm toward TSMC's more reliable yields, allowing Samsung's foundry business to struggle while TSMC dominated the high-end mobile market.
