Mark Jansen of Android Police recently detailed his struggle to adopt the Boox Go Color 7, noting that while the device is versatile, it often feels like e-reader hardware running on smartphone software. This mismatch leads to a fragmented experience where the device sits between two worlds and, in Jansen's view, performs worse than both. The core issue is a fundamental tension between the resource-heavy nature of Android and the slow-refresh characteristics of E Ink displays.
The Hardware Paradox
To compensate for the demands of the Android operating system, these tablets require significantly more powerful hardware than their proprietary counterparts. For example, the Boox Go Color 7 utilizes a 2.4GHz octa-core processor and 4GB of RAM. In contrast, a dedicated reader like the Kobo Clara Colour operates on a much leaner 2GHz dual-core processor with only 1GB of RAM.
Despite this raw power advantage, the result is often counterintuitive. Android e-readers can actually feel slower when performing basic tasks, such as opening e-books, compared to the streamlined experience of the 11th generation Kindle or the Kobo Clara Colour. The overhead of a general-purpose OS creates a performance lag that specialized, closed-loop systems simply avoid.
The Optimization Gap
Beyond raw speed, there is a critical disconnect in how software is rendered. Most Android apps, including the Kindle app, are designed for high-refresh-rate screens targeting 60fps. When these apps are ported to E Ink, they often exhibit stuttering and cause user disorientation unless animations are manually disabled by the user.
