Smeg has officially entered the air fryer market with the launch of the AFC01 Dual Flavour Air Fryer. The appliance, which debuted at EuroCucina during Milan Design Week, aims to merge high-performance cooking with the brand's signature retro aesthetic.

Departing from the industry-standard pull-out drawer, the AFC01 utilizes a top-loading design. The unit features a top-lift lid operated by a central release button and a removable basket, a configuration designed to reduce the countertop footprint typically required by sliding drawers. Internally, the cooker offers a 7.3-liter capacity, positioning it as a viable option for larger households.

Hybrid Cooking Capabilities

Beyond traditional air frying, the AFC01 is a dual-function cooker. It incorporates a dedicated steam mode, marketed as "Juicy+Crispy," which allows for the preparation of more delicate ingredients that might otherwise dry out under intense circulating heat. This hybrid approach allows users to toggle between high-heat crisping and moisture-rich steaming within a single chassis.

A Shift in Kitchen Aesthetics

Smeg is known for its "Technology with style" philosophy, having already established a footprint in the luxury appliance market with its iconic refrigerators and coffee makers. Until now, the brand lacked a dedicated air fryer, leaving a gap in its small electrics lineup.

By introducing the AFC01, Smeg is targeting a specific market segment where high-performance tools are often viewed as bulky or aesthetically unappealing. The move positions the air fryer as a design piece for the kitchen rather than a purely utilitarian tool, challenging the trend of "hulking" plastic appliances that dominate the current category.

Market Outlook

As the air fryer market becomes increasingly saturated with similar drawer-style models, Smeg's focus on form factor and the addition of steam functionality serves as a differentiator. While the AFC01 introduces a new silhouette to the category, the industry will be watching to see if the top-loading mechanism gains wider traction over the traditional drawer design in premium kitchen segments.
