Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Preview: Highwind Airship and New Playable Leads

Square Enix is preparing to conclude one of the most ambitious projects in gaming history with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. The finale of the remake trilogy is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Following a 45-minute demo at Gamescom 2026, Polygon reported that the game introduces the Highwind airship, a pivotal addition that enables seamless travel. Players can use the vessel to revisit locations from FF7 Rebirth and explore previously unseen regions, including Wutai. The preview also confirmed that Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine will join the roster as playable characters, expanding the party's tactical capabilities.

A New Approach to Combat and Exploration

Beyond traversal, Revelation introduces the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS) system. This new gameplay mechanic allows players to utilize specialized costumes to alter their combat roles on the fly. While the specific costume types remain under wraps, the system represents a significant evolution of the series' traditional job mechanics.

For fans of the previous entry's card game, Queen's Blood returns with a new focus. According to the preview, Red XIII will serve as the central protagonist for the Queen's Blood storyline in this installment, integrating the minigame more deeply into the narrative arc.

The Scale of the Finale

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation serves as the climax to a narrative journey that began with the original 1997 release. By integrating previous environments into a single, cohesive world accessible via the Highwind, Square Enix aims to set a new benchmark for open-world RPG design. This structural shift moves away from the segmented regions of the first two remakes toward a more unified global map.

Ari Notis of Polygon described the experience as "one of those you-have-to-play-it-to-believe-it moments of video game wizardry that come along every few years," highlighting the technical leap the studio has taken for the conclusion.

What to Watch

As the April 2027 release date approaches, the industry will be watching how Square Enix handles the transition to a fully seamless world without sacrificing the density of the previous titles. While the core cast and platform availability are confirmed, further details regarding the specific roles within the FITS system and the full scope of the Wutai region remain to be seen.
