Square Enix has officially detailed the finale of its ambitious reimagining of a gaming classic, titled Final Fantasy VII Revelation. The game is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, marking the end of a trilogy that has sought to remix the narrative of the original 1997 title.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Battle Director Teruki Endo confirmed the title will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2. Along with the release date, the developers introduced new playable characters, bringing Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine into the fold. A central addition to the gameplay is the "FITS" (Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear) system, an outfit-based role mechanic that alters character capabilities. Demonstrations showed Cloud utilizing a Warrior FITS and Tifa employing a Black Mage or Dark Mage configuration.

The Road to Revelation

Final Fantasy VII Revelation serves as the third and final chapter in a project that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and continued with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024. This trilogy has not been a simple remaster, but a fundamental retelling that introduced significant narrative deviations and expanded world-building. By splitting the original story across three massive titles, Square Enix has had the opportunity to deepen character arcs and modernize combat systems for a contemporary audience.

Industry Implications

As the conclusion to one of the most anticipated projects in the industry, Revelation is tasked with resolving the complex narrative threads and timeline shifts introduced throughout the series. Beyond the plot, the game signals Square Enix's broader strategy to transform Final Fantasy VII into an "ever-evolving" franchise. By establishing a framework that extends beyond a single trilogy, the company is positioning its most famous IP for long-term sustainability through potential future expansions and spin-offs.

The Final Experience

Despite the high expectations, the development team is keeping specific plot resolutions under wraps to preserve the impact of the ending. Director Naoki Hamaguchi emphasized a desire for players to discover the story's conclusions organically, stating that rather than having developers explain the answers, the team would love for players to receive them on their own as a personal experience. While a Story Expansion Pass has been confirmed to exist with two DLCs, the specific release window for this additional content remains to be detailed.
