Wizards of the Coast reveals 'Reality Fracture' and new Empower Jace mechanic

Wizards of the Coast has begun unveiling cards for its upcoming 'Reality Fracture' set, introducing a narrative centered on the Echoverse—an alternate universe featuring mirror versions of established characters. The expansion marks a pivotal shift in gameplay mechanics and serves as the final Magic-themed set before the game transitions to a 'Universes Beyond' Star Trek expansion later this year.

Two key cards have been revealed: the Mythic Rare legendary artifact 'The Echoverse Fulcrum' and the Rare sorcery 'Vraska’s Final Mercy.' The Echoverse Fulcrum functions as a board wipe paired with card selection, allowing players to draw and discard a card. Vraska’s Final Mercy offers players a choice between two modes: destroying a creature or planeswalker at the cost of two life, or drawing cards and boosting a Jace token through the set's new 'Empower Jace' mechanic.

The Empower Jace System

The 'Empower Jace' mechanic represents a fundamental change in how planeswalkers are deployed. When triggered, the mechanic creates a Jace token if the player does not already control one and adds a specified number of loyalty counters to it. These tokens are equipped with two specific abilities: a -1 action to Surveil 1 and a -3 action to draw a card. This system effectively treats planeswalkers as a form of 'amass' token, allowing players to build loyalty incrementally rather than relying solely on the static starting values of traditional planeswalker cards.

Market and Meta Implications

This shift in loyalty management is already impacting the secondary market. The ability to rapidly build loyalty on tokens has sparked renewed interest in niche legacy artifacts, specifically the Ichormoon Gauntlet from 'Phyrexia: All Will Be One.' Because the Gauntlet synergizes with high-loyalty requirements, competitive players and collectors are revisiting older cards that were previously considered too situational for the current meta. By breathing new life into these forgotten assets, 'Reality Fracture' is altering the valuation of existing collections while redefining the strategic utility of the planeswalker archetype.

Release Schedule

'Reality Fracture' is scheduled for a staggered rollout in late 2026. Pre-release events are set to begin on September 25, followed by a digital launch on MTG Arena on September 29.
