Avatar Robotics Raises $6.5M to Scale Teleoperated Industrial Workforce
The San Francisco startup uses remote human operators to bridge the gap between manual labor and full robotic autonomy.
San Francisco-based Avatar Robotics has raised $6.5 million in seed funding to expand its platform of remotely operated humanoid robots. The round, led by AlleyCorp, aims to solve immediate industrial labor shortages while building the datasets required for future autonomous AI.
The seed funding follows a pre-seed round led by defy.vc. Other participants in the seed round included Headline, Henry Ford III, Refashiond, Paul Vogel, Jack Huffard, and Samuel Udotong. Founded in 2024 by MIT graduates CEO Colin Webb and Nenye Anagbogu, the company deploys wheeled humanoid robots sourced from China into warehouses and factories. These machines are controlled in real-time by human contractors in Mexico, Colombia, and the Philippines using Meta Quest VR headsets, with operators earning between $5 and $20 per hour.
The Data-First Strategy
While industry giants like Tesla and Figure AI focus on developing fully autonomous humanoids from the ground up, Avatar Robotics employs a "human-in-the-loop" model. By using humans to "puppeteer" robots in real-world settings, the company bypasses current technical hurdles of autonomous software. This approach allows the startup to provide immediate utility to clients while simultaneously collecting a proprietary library of human-robot interaction data.
CEO Colin Webb argues that this path is more efficient than traditional data collection. "Is it better to strap sensors to people and pay them to collect data all over the world, or is it better to have those people do direct work that is valuable immediately?" Webb asked in an interview with Business Insider. "The latter seems like the more valuable path."
Industrial Impact and Scaling
Since launching in December, Avatar Robotics' fleet has processed and assisted in shipping more than 900,000 products, including work for a global beauty retailer. The company has now moved into a post-pilot expansion phase, partnering with a multi-billion-dollar warehouse operator to support complex sorting and picking workflows.
This model addresses the "data bottleneck" currently hindering the robotics industry. By generating revenue through teleoperation today, Avatar Robotics creates a sustainable loop where paid labor trains the AI that will eventually automate those same tasks. Amy Yin, a partner at defy.vc, noted that the approach is "incredibly clever," using remote operators to bridge the gap while improving autonomy with every completed task.
The Path to Autonomy
As the company scales, the focus remains on the transition from remote control to independence. The real-world data gathered from these industrial deployments will serve as the training ground for the next generation of physical AI. The success of this model depends on the company's ability to translate thousands of hours of human-led teleoperation into reliable, autonomous software that can eventually operate without a VR-equipped handler.
