Valve Lowers Frame Rate Floor for Steam Frame VR Certification
The hardware maker is easing performance requirements to attract more native ports while introducing a strict new resolution minimum.
Valve has updated the certification standards for its upcoming standalone VR headset, the Steam Frame, lowering the performance bar for developers to earn the "Steam Frame Verified" badge. The company reduced the minimum required frame rate for native VR applications from 90 fps to 72 fps.
According to reporting from Road to VR, the shift in requirements comes with a new trade-off: developers must now ensure their games maintain a minimum resolution of 1,728 x 1,728 per eye during normal gameplay to keep the Verified status. For titles that cannot meet a lower threshold of 1,440 x 1,440 per eye, Valve will apply an "Unsupported" badge. Despite this label, such games will remain available for users to download and play on the device.
The Push for Native Content
The Steam Frame is Valve's entry into the standalone VR market, designed to run SteamOS and allow users to play their Steam library either via streaming or natively. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and includes integrated eye-tracking to support foveated rendering, a technique that optimizes performance by reducing image quality in the user's peripheral vision.
Valve originally established the 90 fps requirement during GDC 2026 in March. However, the move to 72 fps aligns the Steam Frame more closely with the industry standards set by the Meta Quest series. This change is widely seen as a strategic move to lower the barrier for developers porting existing Quest content to the Steam ecosystem, as many of those titles are built around a 72Hz baseline.
Balancing Quality and Accessibility
This adjustment reflects Valve's attempt to balance a broad library of available games with a premium user experience. By lowering the frame rate, Valve makes the platform more accessible to a wider range of developers. Simultaneously, the introduction of the 1,728 x 1,728 resolution floor prevents developers from simply slashing visual fidelity to meet performance targets, ensuring that "Verified" games maintain a high standard of clarity.

Industry observers are watching to see if this flexibility will trigger a wave of native ports from the Quest store to SteamOS. While the hardware capabilities of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 are known, the actual volume of "Verified" native content will depend on how developers react to these updated benchmarks. It remains to be seen how many legacy titles will end up with the "Unsupported" tag as the device nears its official launch.
