HII Taps Path and GrayMatter Robotics for $900M Navy Shipbuilding Push
The largest U.S. shipbuilder is integrating physical AI to scale production of carriers, submarines, and destroyers.
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has entered into long-term production agreements with Path Robotics and GrayMatter Robotics to integrate autonomous systems into U.S. Navy shipbuilding. The initiative marks a massive bet on physical AI to accelerate the fabrication of both crewed and uncrewed naval platforms.
Under the terms of the agreement, HII intends to award up to $900 million in shipbuilding work to its two partners over a seven-year period. These performance-based contracts are a central pillar of HII's High-Yield Production Robotics (HYPR) program, launched in April. The program specifically targets the production of aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, and unmanned surface vessels.
The Shift to Adaptive Automation
HII, the largest shipbuilder in the United States, faces significant pressure to expand capacity to meet U.S. Navy demands. Traditional shipbuilding has long relied on fixed robotic cells, which struggle with the extreme scale and complexity of naval vessels. The HYPR program seeks to move beyond these limitations by deploying adaptive automation capable of handling variable environments.
To achieve this, HII is leveraging specialized capabilities from its partners. Path Robotics provides autonomous welding powered by its Obsidian physical AI model, while GrayMatter Robotics focuses on the critical stages of robotic sanding, grinding, surface finishing, and inspection.
Industrial Implications
This partnership represents a fundamental shift toward the adoption of "Physical AI" in heavy industrial manufacturing. By integrating autonomous production lines, HII aims to scale its shipbuilding capacity and overall efficiency. This transition is critical for reducing the industry's reliance on manual labor for hazardous tasks, such as blasting and welding, which often create bottlenecks in naval production.
"Together, we are defining a new approach to robotics in shipbuilding: automation that can adapt to extreme levels of complexity, mix, and size," said Eric Chewning, executive vice president of maritime systems and corporate strategy at HII.
Scaling the Naval Base
As the U.S. continues to prioritize the expansion of its naval fleet, automating the most labor-intensive parts of the build process has become a strategic necessity. Andy Lonsberry, co-founder and CEO of Path Robotics, noted that the HYPR program serves as a "powerful validation" of the vision that physical AI can scale capacity within one of the world's most demanding production environments.
Industry observers will now watch how these autonomous systems perform when scaled across HII's massive shipyards. While the financial commitment is clear, the long-term success of the program depends on whether these AI-driven robots can maintain the rigorous quality standards required for nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers over the next seven years.
