Bedrock Robotics Deploys Autonomous Excavators to Texas and Nevada Sites
The Waymo-led startup is using a machine-learning retrofit system to automate heavy earthwork and combat construction labor shortages.
Bedrock Robotics has deployed its first fully autonomous, retrofitted heavy excavators to active infrastructure projects in Texas and Nevada. The move marks a significant step in bringing "Physical AI" to high-value industrial work to address critical labor gaps in the construction sector.
The company is partnering with several major firms to automate early-stage earthwork, specifically cut and fill operations. These deployments include a water treatment facility project with Sundt Construction in Nevada and a massive 1.2 million cubic yard project with Zachry Construction Corp. Other partners involved in the rollout include Champion Site Prep in Texas.
The Technology Behind the Machine
Unlike companies building robots from the ground up, Bedrock Robotics utilizes a plug-and-play retrofit kit that can be applied to existing heavy equipment. This system is powered by an end-to-end machine learning model that the company says was trained over tens of thousands of hours. While Bedrock is currently deploying equipment outfitted at its own headquarters, the company expects to begin running the system on partner-owned equipment by the end of the year.
Addressing a Labor Crisis
The push toward autonomy comes as the construction industry faces a severe labor crisis, driven largely by an aging workforce. Excavators are a primary target for automation because they are among the most complex machines on a job site, often requiring years of specialized training to master. By removing human operators from these high-risk machines, Bedrock aims to improve site safety and mitigate the impact of the shrinking talent pool.
Industry Implications
This deployment represents a shift toward automating the critical first phase of construction. Because subsequent stages—such as the installation of steel and concrete—cannot begin until earthwork is finished, automating excavation can make entire project timelines more predictable. The company, which is led by veterans from Alphabet's autonomous driving unit Waymo, is backed by more than $350 million in venture capital, including a recent $270 million funding round.
The Road Ahead
Bedrock's long-term vision extends beyond single-machine autonomy. The company is working toward the orchestration of multi-machine fleets, where excavators, bulldozers, and trucks operate as a coordinated, autonomous team. Observers will be watching to see if the retrofit model can scale across diverse partner fleets and if the machine learning models can maintain consistency across different soil types and site conditions.
