IDS Imaging Debuts Nion iToF Camera for High-Speed Industrial 3D Sensing

IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH has expanded its 3D sensor portfolio with the launch of Nion, an industrial indirect time-of-flight (iToF) camera. Now in series production, the device is specifically engineered to meet the rigorous demands of high-speed industrial applications.

The Nion camera is powered by the onsemi AF0130 indirect time-of-flight sensor from the Hyperlux ID family. According to technical specifications, the camera features a 1.2-megapixel resolution and delivers depth information at a rate of 30 frames per second (fps). To ensure durability in harsh environments, the device is built with an IP67-rated rugged housing.

Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Oberursel, Germany, IDS Imaging has grown into a global provider of 2D and 3D imaging solutions. The company currently maintains a portfolio of approximately 5,000 products and employs more than 320 people across its international branches, which include operations in the U.K., Japan, South Korea, and the United States. This expansion into specialized iToF technology reflects a broader industry shift toward integrating depth sensing into existing production lines to improve spatial awareness and precision.

Impact on Automation

The introduction of the Nion sensor addresses a critical need for precise 3D data that can keep pace with real-world process speeds in sectors such as logistics, robotics, and general automation. By providing stable depth data under variable lighting and motion conditions, the sensor allows operators to enhance existing 2D processes with reliable depth information without compromising speed or accuracy.

Patrick Schick, Product Manager for 3D vision and imaging software at IDS, noted that the Nion provides a solid foundation for automation processes that rely on fast and accurate 3D data. He further explained that in many instances, companies can retain their existing 2D processes and simply supplement them with depth data where it aids decision-making.

Future Outlook

As industrial environments become more complex, the ability to integrate 3D sensing into legacy 2D workflows is expected to drive adoption in warehouse automation and robotic picking. While the Nion is now available for production, the industry will be watching how these iToF solutions scale across more demanding ambient light environments and whether further resolution increases become standard for industrial-grade depth sensors. The shift toward iToF technology suggests a future where depth sensing is as ubiquitous as standard 2D imaging in the smart factory.
