GAM Enterprises Acquires PSC Gear Reducer IP from Schaeffler
The Illinois-based motion control company establishes a German subsidiary to vertically integrate its flagship product line.
GAM Enterprises has acquired the intellectual property and technology for the PSC gear reducer product line from Schaeffler Ultra Precision Drives (SUPD). The move secures the core technology behind GAM's flagship GPL product, shifting the company from a customer of the technology to its owner.
To facilitate the transition and maintain production, GAM has established a new subsidiary, GAM-Melior GmbH, located in Hameln, Germany. This entity will be responsible for the production and ongoing support of the PSC product line. The acquisition allows the Mount Prospect, Illinois-based company to bring the manufacturing of a critical component in-house.
Strategic Background
Founded in 1990, GAM Enterprises has long relied on the PSC gear reducer as a foundational element of its GPL product offerings. The technology was previously managed by SUPD (formerly Melior Motion GmbH), which Schaeffler acquired in 2022 as part of a broader effort to expand its precision gearbox portfolio for industrial automation. By purchasing the IP from Schaeffler, GAM effectively reverses a dependency on a third-party supplier for its most vital hardware.
Industry Implications
This acquisition represents a significant step toward vertical integration for GAM. By controlling the IP and manufacturing process, the company reduces its exposure to supply chain disruptions and external vendor pricing. This autonomy is expected to enhance GAM's ability to scale its manufacturing capabilities and more aggressively serve the global robotics and automation markets, where high-precision motion control is a primary requirement.
Craig Van den Avont, CEO of GAM, described the patented technology as a "highly differentiated solution for high-precision applications" and a "strong fit within GAM’s broader motion control strategy." He further claimed that the technology outperforms other servo gearboxes currently on the market.
Future Outlook
With the establishment of GAM-Melior GmbH, the company is now positioned to iterate on the PSC technology without external constraints. Market observers will be watching to see how this integration affects the lead times and pricing of the GPL product line, as well as whether GAM leverages this IP to develop new precision products beyond its current flagship offerings.
