University of Göttingen uses VR to animate 1,500-year-old Madaba Map

A new digital initiative transforms a 1970s life-sized replica of the world's oldest Holy Land map into an interactive experience.

The University of Göttingen has launched a digital project to bring the ancient Madaba Map to life through virtual reality and interactive media. The initiative, titled 'Auf der Karte nach Jerusalem' ('On the Map to Jerusalem'), aims to make one of antiquity's most significant cartographic treasures accessible to the public and students.

Supported by a €10,000 grant from the Novus Foundation, the project utilizes a life-sized replica of the map held by the university. This replica was created in the 1970s using mold impressions taken directly from the original mosaic. The project employs a combination of VR, interactive displays, and pop-up exhibitions to translate the static map into a dynamic educational tool. According to project leader Dr. Jon C. Cubas Díaz, the map is vital because it "shows how people in late antiquity imagined the biblical landscape."

A Window into Late Antiquity

The original Madaba Map is a 6th-century floor mosaic located in St. George’s Church in Madaba, Jordan. It is recognized as the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land and contains the earliest known cartographic depiction of Jerusalem. The massive mosaic illustrates a vast biblical landscape stretching from present-day Lebanon to the Nile Delta in Egypt.

While the original remains in Jordan, the University of Göttingen's replica has served as a research document for decades. However, it remained largely overlooked until this current digital push. Dr. Cubas Díaz noted that the copy is more than an impressive display piece, stating, "It’s also an important document in the research history of the Madaba Map itself."

Bridging History and Technology

By integrating modern technology with ancient cartography, the project allows users to virtually enter St. George’s Church and explore the intricate details of the map without the need for international travel. This approach not only preserves the historical data of the 1970s replica but also serves as a training ground for students in the fields of digital storytelling and public engagement.

Future Outlook

The initiative marks a shift in how academic institutions utilize physical archives to create immersive public experiences. As the project rolls out its pop-up exhibitions and VR modules, the focus remains on bridging the gap between specialized research and general public accessibility. By transforming a static archive into an interactive journey, the university ensures that the insights of late antiquity are available to a modern, digital-first audience, fostering a deeper understanding of early cartography and the historical evolution of the Holy Land's depiction.
