HD Hyundai and Persona AI to Deploy Humanoid Welding Robots by 2027

A new partnership aims to solve shipbuilding labor shortages by bringing AI-powered humanoid hardware into hazardous shipyard environments.

HD Hyundai has partnered with Houston-based startup Persona AI and Korea's Vazil Company to develop an AI-powered humanoid robot designed for shipyard welding. The initiative, led through HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Robotics, seeks to automate one of the most physically demanding roles in naval construction.

Under the terms of the partnership, Persona AI is responsible for the humanoid's hardware as well as the AI-based control and learning algorithms. Vazil Company is tasked with designing the robot's welding tools and constructing the industrial testing environment. To ensure the robots can operate in real-world conditions, HD KSOE will provide critical shipyard data, field engineering insights, and the necessary infrastructure for performance validation in live environments. The partners are targeting the completion of a prototype by the end of 2026, with full commercial deployment scheduled for 2027.

The Challenge of Shipyard Automation

Shipbuilding remains a cornerstone of global infrastructure, yet it is an industry plagued by significant labor shortages and inherent safety hazards. While traditional automation has been used in manufacturing, fixed robotic arms often struggle in the non-standardized, complex environments of a shipyard, where tasks require mobility and adaptability. The shift toward humanoid forms represents a strategic move to create AI agents capable of performing human-like tasks in "dirty" industrial settings where rigid automation fails.

Industrial Implications

This project marks a pivotal transition for the robotics industry, moving humanoid technology out of controlled laboratory settings and social media demonstrations and into high-value, high-risk industrial labor. By automating welding—a task that is often dangerous and physically grueling—the project aims to create a blueprint for "smart shipyards." Lee Dong-ju, head of the manufacturing innovation laboratory at HD KSOE, stated that welding humanoids will not only boost productivity but also significantly reduce the burden on workers and greatly enhance safety.

If successful, the collaboration will prove that AI-driven humanoids can handle the rigors of heavy industry, potentially solving critical labor gaps in naval infrastructure.
