Valve Announces Steam Frame Wireless VR Headset for 2026
The standalone headset blends native Arm-based gaming with high-fidelity PC streaming to unify the Steam ecosystem.
Valve has announced the Steam Frame, a standalone wireless VR headset designed to stream and natively play titles from the Steam library. The device marks a pivotal shift in Valve's hardware strategy, aiming to remove the physical tethers and complex basestations that defined previous high-end VR experiences.
Scheduled for release in early 2026, the Steam Frame is part of a coordinated hardware expansion that includes a new "Steam Machine" home console and an overhauled Steam Controller. All three devices will run on SteamOS, creating a synchronized environment across different form factors. Valve has already begun distributing developer kits to studios to ensure software optimization ahead of the consumer launch.
Technical Specifications
The Steam Frame is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 chipset paired with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Users can choose between 256GB or 1TB of internal storage, with the option for further expansion via microSD. To handle visuals, the headset employs pancake lenses and dual LCDs with a resolution of 2,160 x 2,160 per eye. The display supports a refresh rate ranging from 72Hz to 120Hz, with a 144Hz mode available for experimental use.
To optimize performance, Valve is introducing "Foveated Streaming." This technology uses interior eye-tracking cameras to identify exactly where a user is looking, allowing the system to concentrate image quality and processing power on the focal point while reducing detail in the periphery. This allows the device to maintain high visual fidelity whether playing "Steam Frame Verified" titles natively on its Arm-based hardware or streaming from a PC via a Wi-Fi 6E dongle.
A Unified Ecosystem
This launch represents a significant strategic pivot for Valve. By integrating the Steam Frame with the Steam Deck and the upcoming Steam Machine, Valve is building a unified ecosystem where SteamOS serves as the connective tissue.
